Target

Some days I should just go back to bed and start over. I decided to stop by Target (in the next town) on my way home this morning so I could get my packing done for vacation. For some reason my bank card would not read when I swiped it. When the cashier put my card number in, it said the security number on the back did not match. After 5...yep, 5 tries I used a different bank card. When I got home I looked at my online statement to see what the problem might be and wouldn't you know it, I got charged $47.02 all 5 times and paid for it with my other account! So much for saving time!! I now have to drive back and get it taken care of.

Employee Free Choice Act

I wrote last week and told you that I am passionate about employees being able to unionize. Whether you or someone you know is a union member or not, it affects you indirectly in some way.
I ask that you read the following and PLEASE sign the petition!! This is not any kind of advertising, it is what my life has been about for the past 4 years. I alone can not make a huge difference but, with everyone working together ... we can change the world.
Let me know if you decide to sign the petition. E-mail me if you would prefer, I am just intrested in knowing how many do sign it.
I just signed an important petition to help get our country back on track, and I hope you’ll join me.

In today’s economy, folks like you and me need a fair deal and a chance to get ahead. It’s only getting worse for working families as the cost of everything from gas to groceries keeps going up.

That’s why I signed a petition supporting the Employee Free Choice Act, which would help level the playing field by making it easier for workers to join unions.
The goal is one million signatures. Will you take a moment to sign, and pass this along? Go to:
http://freechoiceact.org/BCTGM

Some CEOs just go too far. They rake in millions while cutting back health benefits and raises for their employees. It’s time to bring back some balance in this economy. This bill would help all of us, by giving workers more muscle to raise living standards, improve health care, and stop outsourcing.

We’re all in this together. Help us get to one million signatures! It just takes one minute –

Let me introduce you to my family:

What a good (shopping) weekend!

Friday I took my youngest daughter to the bank to open her own account (she already has one I opened when she was a baby). She has been babysitting and had a box she kept her money in. With box in tow, she opened her very own account with the $250.00 stashed in it. She is excited about getting her very own debit card.

We went to Dick's Sporting Goods to get part of a Father's Day present. I used a $20 off $20 coupon I received in the mail and got this 2 chairs and a headlamp (for night fishing) for $7.22.

We also went to JC Penney and used my $20 off $20 purchase. She got 2 pair of shorts and 2 shirts for $4.99 plus tax since they were having a buy one/get 1 for $1 sale.

At Kohl's I got a gazebo for the lake. They have all their garden stuff marked down 70%-80%!

I want to take a minute to share something with you that I am passionate about. I have spent the last several years committed to addressing this issue that until 4yrs ago I took for granted. Just a few reasons why unions are good for employees:

# 1 – Working together, union members have the strength to win better wages, affordable health care, a secure retirement, and safer workplaces.

# 2 – The "union advantage" is substantial. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, union members are much more likely to have health benefits and pensions.

# 3 – For people of color and women workers, the union impact is even greater. Women workers who are union members earn nearly $9,000 a year more than their non-union counterparts. For African-American workers, the union differential is also about $9,000, and for Latino workers the yearly advantage is more than $11,000.

# 4 – In addition to helping workers win better wages and benefits, unions help all workers by giving working families a stronger voice in our communities, in the political arena, and in the global economy.

# 5 – By joining together, we can build the strength to hold elected officials accountable, stop the "race to the bottom" by employers who cut wages and benefits in favor of bigger profits, and win improvements such as affordable, quality health care for all.

I hope to see changes in my workplace and am doing everything I can to make them happen. Until then, I can help others by keeping informed on work related issues and making my voice heard. You can do this also....

Please act now to urge Congress to extend unemployment help for jobless workers whose benefits are running out.

It is urgent that you take action now.Unemployment just took its biggest jump in 22 years, and the number of jobless workers who can't find work is at historic levels. Millions of jobless workers will run out of unemployment insurance benefits this year. And for every two job seekers, only one job is available.

But President Bush is so committed to his failed economic policies that he's promised to veto any attempt to extend unemployment insurance benefits for working families on the brink of disaster. Believe it or not, here's his policy: "Increasing and extending unemployment insurance benefits when unemployment is this low would be unprecedented and counterproductive because it would reduce the incentive for workers to find new employment."Talk about out of touch!

With soaring gas, food and health care costs, even a short period of unemployment can devastate a working family. But the worse this economy gets, the longer it's taking people to find jobs. And working families are suffering.

The U.S. House is expected to vote today or tomorrow on extending unemployment insurance benefits for jobless workers by 13 weeks nationwide and by an additional 13 weeks in high-unemployment states—a move that will benefit 3.8 million workers overall.

Congress must hear your voice. Tell your representative NOW to extend help for jobless workers.

Frugality Fun

These days of high gas prices, saving on a shopping trip has to include the logistics of transportation costs. Many people who drove further away to get to their favorite discount wholesale club or grocer are now re-evaluating whether the savings add up when gas is counted in. If you have to use a credit card or a cash advance to pay for the trip to the store, then it might be time to alter your shopping habits. There are still many ways to save at the grocer or in the retail market, even including gas costs. You can choose to make a few less trips and stock up on items for the long haul. You can clip the coupons and go only on double and triple coupon days. You can also choose to buy items online and have them shipped to your house (although that sometimes includes a shipping fee).

If you have family close by, you can even make it a family affair. You can carpool to and from the shopping centers, can start a coupon trading group, and even tell each other about rebates and discounts offer online. Sometimes you even get free shipping online for certain time periods or dollar amounts spent. This works particularly well if you shop at wholesale clubs, where packages are in multiples that may be too much for one family. If you share the shopping, you can also split the cost and the package and thus buy just enough and save money at the lower discount rate. Wholesale clubs are also good for items that aren't normally considered when joining, like discount eye glasses and tires. It doesn't just have to be about food. So, when you are deciding to save some money next shopping trip, consider all the alternatives and try to find ways to minimize your transportation and product costs while having some fun too.
