My plan for this week

Unexpected money?!

What do 'normal' people do when they get unexpected money? I wonder because obiviously, me and my husband are not normal when it comes to how we handle money we come into but, were not expecting/counting on.

We are both employeed and make EXACTLY the same amount, we have the same pension plan, the same 401k plan (I do contribute a higher % to mine), and the same benefits. (life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance) We both own stocks, (seperately) and make a game out of who does better with their brokerage account in these horrible market times.

I can't think of a single thing we 'need', and no pressing bills that need paying off. I try and be frugal in my everyday life. I contribute to my savings throughout the year so, when it comes time for me to get my bonus... I feel like I earned it and spend it on anything I want. (he does the same) Our tax refund is split and spent the same way. Last year is the only time we put our bonus' together and made a major purchase. We bought a lot on the lake so we would have somewhere to keep the boats and easy access for fishing/skiing.

In the next couple of weeks we will be receiving a substantial amout of money...bonus' and tax refund. This has got me curious as to how others handle it.

Budget Remodeling

I am addicted to HGTV!!!

When we moved to a new state our biggest concern was selling our house and buying a new one.

Our house sold within a couple of weeks. We were on our way but, had not found a new house suitable to our needs. We ended up having all of our belongings shipped to a storage facility, rented an apartment, and started work.

I started with all of that so you would understand how we became to live in the house we now live in. After 2 months in an apartment I was going crazy! We had just left our 5 bedroom home on 34 acres for a 2 bedroom apartment with what I am sure was a basketball team living upstairs from us.

We looked, and looked, and looked...and looked some more, at houses. When we found the house that suited our needs as far as size (It had to be at least 4 bedrooms/3 baths), and lot size (It had to be large enough accomodate 2 boats, a motorhome, an enclosed trailer, 2 motorcycles, and 5 cars...out of sight) we bought it. There was AWFUL wallpaper, the kitchen was out dated, and the bathrooms needed remodeling. I had a vision!

I watch HGTV to get ideas then go to DIY Network to learn how to do it. Next step, the Remodeling budget estimator.

I found the perfect place to get everything I need for remodeling at 1/2 the price. Instead of going to major building supply places, look at locally owned buisnesses first. They are generally your best bet for saving money.

With all the money I save with DIY home projects, I go to Drexel Heritage's twice a year factory sale to furnish my entire home. If you are within a days drive from Drexel, NC it is well worth the drive. Just remember to bring a trailer with you because you have to buy it, and take it with you.

Book Swap

I am an avid reader. That said, I have spent tons of money on books. I have decided to cut down considerably on what I spend on the books I read. I do not have time to run to the library (that would take forethought and organizational skills and I have neither) so, I decided to try a book swap.

The Best Jean for your Butt?

Between work and this kitchen project I jumped into head first, I have no time for anything else. I started off by just putting tin on my kitchen ceiling. One thing led to another and I have now painted, refinished the cabinets, got new hardware for the cabinets, am in the process of retiling, and in the next couple of weeks will be getting a new countertop.
My husband will probably reconsider his next fishing trip because that is when I get all my great ideas that end up costing him.

Redbook has a good article to read if you have ever wondered what type of jean is the best for your butt. The prices in each catagory range from $20 to over $200 so, there is something for everybody.

Taking a break...

My husband is fishing in the catfish tournament that he has been 'practicing' for. Yeah, last weekend was a practice fishing trip to find the good spots. That is too funny to me! He called earlier and actually told me he won with a 37lb Blue Catfish. Wooohoo! He won $200. If I were him, I would not have told me that part. HaHa!

I have taken advantage of the time and cleaned out closet, painted the dining room, and am now working on a project that may be more than I can handle. I am putting tin panels on my kitchen ceiling and new light fixtures. If I ever get it finished it is going to look great. 14 trips to Home Depot later...I better get back to work.
